New Life Church An Oasis of Love

with Pastor Marti and Jessica McGrail

Dear Pastor Marty and Jessica,

We can't thank God enough for you. Each morning we begin our day by reading Today. It's simply awesome! And Jessica's story just brought me to my knees. You are both incredible human beings and an inspiration to many.

When is your book TODAY coming out? And why don't you publish Jessica's Story, it will help so many, just as it did me.

Dear Pastor Marty and Jessica,

We receive Today here in South Africa every day and love it. I'm wondering if you might consider writing one for children?

Dear Pastor McGrail,

Here is a poem I wrote just for you called ''The Hoodlum Priest''.

Hoodlum priest, Hoodlum priest where you gonna go?

Hoodlum Priest, Hoodlum Priest tell them who you know.

Hoodlum Priest, Hoodlum Priest don't be afraid

Hoodlum Priest, Hoodlum Priest show them you're brave.

You've weathered the storm above and beyond

entered the den where dealers throng

You walk in the ''hood'', pray for the lost,

provide for the poor while others boasts the ''cross''

Children call you pastor they long for your presence

adults are divided you're a phony or an essence

Clergy ''turn'' against you, shun you on every hand

''users'' call you blessed, you're a patsy or a friend

You're fighting the battle, you're running the race

Your parish is your heart, yet they test your faith

Your true friends stand beside you

they struggle for devotion, the wolves in sheep clothing

eventually to be uncovered.

Hoodlum priest, Hoodlum priest where you gonna go

Hoodlum priest, Hoodlum priest show them who you know.

Dearest Pastor Marty and Jessica,

First, I would like to thank you for your inspirational words of encouragement you send to me everyday. When I read your daily word it gives me a few moments out of my hectic day to reflect on what really matters in life - my relationship with Jesus. When I become burdened with heartache over life's everyday pains and tragedy's I ground myself with His love.

Thank you for your help and guidance.

Dear Pastor Marty,

Thank you so much for Today it has helped me at home and at work deal with issues that I just couldn't handle before. My husband is now going to church with me and what a difference in our relationship. After reading the story of your life on your web site he was inspired to really seek Jesus more in his life, and my husband is not an easy sell pastor. Do you know we even pray together now after 10 years of marriage. Can you believe it?!? Thanks pastor. Keep up the ''Good Work'' we really look forward to Today everyday.

Dear Pastors Marty and Jessica,

Thank you for Today, we've got many people on the island reading it and we love the way you bring God's Word to life in the here and now, even the kids enjoy reading Today. Just wanted to drop you a note to let you know after receiving your advice and prayers several months ago my wife and I have reunited and our family couldn't be happier. The children are so much happier when we laugh, play games and go out together, it's wonderful and nothing short of a miracle. You see pastor, as I said in my last letter to you, I thought I had fallen out of love with my wife, then one day I woke up after receiving your letter. It's like something just changed in my life and I can't explain it. My wife and I haven't been this happy in 15 years of marriage. And You were right pastor, a man's treasure is his family. I can't stop thanking God for bringing you into our life. We would like to invite both you and Jessica over for dinner and to meet our family, but we live in Guam.

Pastor Marty and Jessica,

I want to share this with you. Thank you again for all your love and support. I love you.

Life as a Mother is ultimately wonderful!

Last week, Wednesday, Feb 10, 2010 at 1130pm my water broke. At first I wasn’t sure. No, it’s not like the movies where a bunch of water gushes down your legs. LoL. It was only a couple cups. So, what did I do? I sat on the toilet thinking maybe I need to pee. I called my cousin, Lissa in San Diego and told her. She told me to go to the hospital. Did I do it? No, I called the doctor and he wasn’t sure if my water had broken either. He asked me to check if I was leaking, but I wasn’t, so he told me to see him in the morning. I was tired and went back to bed. Then, my friend, Angela, called me and told me my water broke and to go to the hospital. I told her I was feeling OK. Then, I started leaking more water. I finally got up and called a taxi. BUT, we were in the middle of a blizzard. The roads are snowed over and it would take at least two hours for a taxi to get me. So, I called 911. As I was describing what had happened, the 911 operator told me to go downstairs because the taxi service had already called 911 for me. As I opened the front door, there were five cop cars outside my condo. When they started heading into my place, the first thing I said was, “My water just broke. Why five cop cars? I need an ambulance!” LoL. Eventually the paramedics and first aid squad arrived. I told them I had to go to Riverview Hospital, but they said this was an emergency and I had to go the nearest hospital. My doctor didn’t have privileges at the hospital I was at, so I wanted to transfer. Neither the paramedics nor hospitals would transport me. So, what did I do? I prayed, signed the papers to release me from that hospital and I took the chance of delivering my baby in a taxi. Boy, that was scary! The freakin’ seatbelts didn’t even work!

Thank God, I arrived safely at Riverview Hospital at 4am. That’s when I realized miracles were starting to happen. Miracles? Yes, miracles. I’m Christian, raised Catholic. I’ve always believed in God, Jesus Christ. But, I have never experienced anything like what I’m about to tell you.

So, I’m at the hospital all alone. My mom doesn’t arrive for another two weeks. What am I going to do? First, I continue praying. I call a few friends, but everyone’s car is snowed in. I call Pastor Marty and a few hours later, Pastor Marty and his wife, Jessica, walk into my birthing room. I am so thankful, but still experiencing the nature of contractions. They stay with me for a while and Pastor asks me, “What do you want, Rochelle?” I was hesitant, but I finally said, “I want you to stay and pray with me. I want you to be with me during the delivery.” Could you believe it? I just met this guy a few months ago. Why was I asking him to help me deliver Baby James? It’s not his responsibility. He’s not obligated to do that as a Pastor. But, he agreed. Before he left to take care of some things, we all prayed and he said, “You’re having this baby between 1-3pm.”

Overall, my contractions weren’t so bad. As they started, I prayed. I prayed throughout the whole entire labor. Finally, a little after noon the contractions started to get stronger. I was trying to breathe and pray, but I guess I was also pushing a little because I went from 6cm to 10cm within half an hour. I told the nurse, “Where’s the doctor? I’m ready.” The doctor finally arrives and I am still all alone. Then, 1 o’clock hits, the nurses are running down the hall looking for Pastor to tell him I’m having my baby. Pastor walks in and looks at me and I smile. So, it begins. I start pushing and the doctor is telling me exactly what he sees. He tells me Baby James’ head has crowned and if I want to touch it. At first, I give him a funny and confused look, and then I reach down. Oh my gosh, it’s happening! My eyes start to water. Between contractions, we all talk, and I’m smiling and laughing throughout the entire thing! Have you ever heard of such a thing? I’m in pain, but not unbearable pain. Finally, I turn to Pastor and say, “I’m ready to have this baby NOW!” A few more pushes and out comes Baby James! I’m so happy. As they place him on my chest and I look into his eyes… I cry! I’m so ecstatic… a feeling of pure satisfaction.

Everyone congratulates me and tells me they have never seen someone deliver so easily. See, the thing is, in that birthing room, I felt the Holy Spirit. I believe Pastor Marty was there with me as the Holy Spirit. That’s the reason why it was “so easy and so joyous.” Who describes labor and delivery in those words? I was blessed with the Holy Spirit that day and I was born again. It was a miracle. God planned it just fine. He wouldn’t give me anything I couldn’t handle. He knew I was strong, determined and I could do it and I did!

I gave birth to James Valentino Simpauco Ruiz on Feb 11, 2010 at 125pm, weighing 7 lbs and 1 ounce, 19 ¼ inches. Today, one week later, I wake up with James next to me in his bassinet and I simply cry! Again, I thank the Lord, my Lord, my Savior, my Everything!

courage to change the things I can,

and wisdom to know the difference''
